Eight Years of Unity

The end of May marked the eighth year of the uniting of the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC) at the Constituting Synod that took place on 22 May 2009 in Debrecen. Since then, annual celebrations revolving around Unity Day have taken many different forms as the HRC seeks to engage communities around the Carpathian Basin.

The Romanian news portal asked the church leaders in Romania regarding the refugee crisis. Besides the Orthodox and Catholic Church, Béla Kató, Bishop of the Transylvanian Reformed Church District was aslo interviewed.

Bishops and Lay Presidents met in Ukraine

The Presidium of the General Convent (GC) held its regular meeting in Berehove as part of the solidarity shown to the local reformed church. Almost all the Bishops and Lay Presidents from Hungarian speaking reformed churches from Hungary and the neighboring countries were present.

WCC delegation expresses solidarity with Ukraine

A ten-person delegation organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) visited Ukraine from 17 to 20 March, reporting that “the delegation has heard a consistent call for the World Council of Churches and the ecumenical movement to inform the international community about the situation in Ukraine, to promote a more adequate humanitarian response to the human suffering resulting from the conflict, and to support and strengthen the efforts of the churches and faith communities of Ukraine for justice and peace.”

A World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation led by the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit will visit Ukraine from 17 to 20 March to explore how the international ecumenical community may best support churches in Ukraine so that they can contribute to the search for peace in this country.

Bitter Christmas in Ukraine

War. The Christmas of the people living in Sub-Carpathia, Ukraine is shadowed by tension, fear, bitterness and inflation. The war is still going on in the Eastern parts of Ukraine and at many Christmas tables the seats of the male members of the family will be empty. Local people would like peace for Christmas. The Hungarian Reformed Church Aid has delivered hundreds of shoeboxes, packages of food and other donations to the region.

The Extraordinary Assembly of the Transylvanian Reformed Church District approved unanimously the following statement regarding the Re-Nationalization of the Székely Mikó Reformed High-School in Sepsiszentgyörgy/Sfântu Gheorghe by the Romanian State on the 29th of November 2014.

Heavy Protests against Re-nationalization of Church Property in Romania

After the High Court of Ploiesti announced its ruling on 26 November 2014 about the legal status of the property of the Székely Mikó High School, and restored the building to the local government of the city, the Transylvanian Reformed Church District, lawful owner of the property, launched a wave of protest.

Help for Sub-Carpathia

“We can only survive if Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin stand by us and lend their hand”, Bishop in Sub-Carpathian Sándor Zán Fábián told at a press conference held about the assistance given through the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid (HRCA) to the communities living in the region. As announced at the event, the HRCA Sub-Carpathian Action Plan calculates with 124 million HUF, half of which has already been collected.

The Reformed Church in Sub-Carpathia, Ukraine issues peace statement

The leadership of the Reformed Church in Sub-Carpathia has issued a statement of peace, protesting any form of violence and war, and striving instead for the peaceful co-existence of all nations living in Ukraine. The statement is sent to each congregation of RCSC, to the leaders of Ukraine and Hungary, as well as European decision-makers.

Nobody Knows What's Coming

Ukrainian crisis. There is an air of uncertainty these days in Ukraine, which is also being experienced by the 150,000 Hungarians living in Sub-Carpathia. No war has officially been declared, but the partial military mobilization affects Hungarian families, as well. This means that there are Hungarians on the eastern front; moreover, the first victims have already been buried. We recently visited Beregszász (Berehove) with Sándor Pál, director of the Advisory Board of the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid.
