The Fence of Bethesda in Fabulous Colors

Books have always been important allies of doctors in healing children in the Reformed institution. The staff of the Bethesda Children's Hospital of RCH thought: why not allow books to play a role in making the facade of their building friendlier?

With the support of Móra, a book publisher and Kemikál Construction Industry Ltd., which offers the materials needed for painting. The artist and team of Bertalan “Zsili” Babos decorated the concrete fence of Bethesda Children’s Hospital on April 10. This idea was born in connection with another collaboration between the hospital and the publisher, as Móra publishes the volume MocorGO on child development written by hospital specialists.

“We had been planning to renovate the fence for a long time, and during a conversation it emerged that these concrete elements look exactly like giant books on a bookshelf. Images of several such creative fence renovation projects are already circulating on the web, we thought we would implement one with us as well,” said Nóra Tamásné Bese, Director of Social Relations and Communication at Bethesda Children’s Hospital.

“Books have always been important allies in children’s recovery, so why not play a role in making the hospital façade friendlier as well? Especially during the pandemic, it is important to seize every opportunity to cheer up the children and their parents who come to us.”

Móra celebrated its 70th anniversary last year and this year it has a special anniversary of the birth of several iconic authors, such as Mild Zdenek, József Romhányi and Éva Janikovszky. The fence houses the volumes of the anniversary – especially the books of Éva Janikovszky – and the works of Móra readers’ favorite classical and contemporary writers.

Móra Publishing is the proud guardian of the literary works of important and popular Hungarian authors as Éva Janikovszky, István Fekete, Ervin Lázár, Magda Szabó, which are re-issued and refreshed on a regular basis, alongside new projects from up-and-coming, home-grown writers and illustrators. Translations of foreign works play also an important role. Móra is the Hungarian publisher of the works of Richard Scarry, Erich Kästner, Gianni Rodari, Astrid Lindgren as well as many titles by Timothée de Fombelle, Darren Shan, Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre, Marcus Sedgwick, Lauren St John, Susie Morgenstern, Christine Nöstlinger, etc.

The construction is carried out by Bertalan “Zsili” Babos and his team, known for their many iconic interior design works, such as the look if several so called culture or ruin pubs in Budapest, attracting a lot of tourists, like Csendes, Szatyor, or Púder. On the occasion of Women’s Day in March, they made a similar book street art at the castle at the request of the local government of Budavár (Buda Castle) as part of the “Women step by step” project.
