Fall Synod Report 2013

The fall meeting of the General Synod of the RCH began on 14 November in Budapest. Several topics were on the docket for the meeting, including the Roma action plan, the findings of the Church Revision Committee and a discussion on the implication of the Leuenberg Agreement on church legal documents.

Celebrating the Heidelberg Catechism

To celebrate the Heidelberg Catechism's 450th anniversary, the Hungarian Reformed Church accepted a new Hungarian translation of the text and published a special edition of the Catechism containing the full text in the languages of Reformed congregations in the Carpathian Basin.

Hungarian Reformed Church Aid Medical Team Deployed to the Philippines

A medical team from the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid (HRCA) deployed to the Philippines on 11 November following the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in order to deliver medical equipment and 15,000 dollars-worth of aid. The team left Hungary on Monday for the city of Tacloban.

Discussing the Hungarian Perspective on World Mission

Rev. László Gonda has been a member of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism since 2006 and together with his fellow commissioners, helped develop mission statement of the WCC entitled, Together Towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes.

Bishop Bölcskei met with Armenian Church Leaders at WCC Assembly

At the 10th General Assembly of the World Council of Churches, Gusztáv Bölcskei, presiding bishop of the RCH, participated in meetings with His Holiness Karekin II, supreme patriarch and Catholicos of the Holy See of St. Echmiadzin and All Armenians and also Nareg Alemezian, Archbishop and representative of the Cilician Catholicosate (Lebanon).

Hungarians in Transylvania Appeal for Autonomy

Szeklerland is an area in Transylvania, Romania, with a majority population of ethnic Hungarians. On 26 October, the Szekler National Council released a statement outlining its desire for self-government as an autonomous territory following examples established elsewhere in Europe.

A Reformed Voice in the Time of Revolution

The 23rd of October is the anniversary of the 1956 uprising in Budapest against the Soviet regime in Hungary. Former Reformed bishop, László Ravasz, spoke these words to the Hungarian people through a radio address on 1 November 1956.

Another Eco-Congregation Winner

For the second time in its history, the RCH's Eco-Congregation Program has conducted an eco-congregation contest. This year, eight congregations submitted entries for consideration and the Sopron Lutheran congregation was awarded the 2013 prize.

Reflections on Mission

Keith Kraft, a United Church of Christ pastor from the U.S., gives his reflection on the month spent alongside his wife Debbie at a summer camp for Roma in Csonkapapi, Ukraine. The camp provides weeklong programs from June through July for nearly 400 youth from several communities.

Searching to Protect the Created World in Scotland
